iPhone Photos Rejected? HEIC vs JPG and How to Fix It

Why application portals reject iPhone photos, how to convert HEIC to JPG in seconds, and the camera setting that stops the problem for good.

If you took your photo on an iPhone, the most common reason an upload fails is simple: the file is HEIC, not JPG.

What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It keeps photos about half the size of a JPG at the same quality, which saves storage. But many exam, bank and government portals โ€” and older Windows computers โ€” only accept JPG/JPEG.

Signs your file is HEIC:

  • The file name ends in .heic or .heif.
  • The portal says "invalid file type" even though the photo looks normal.
  • The file opens on your iPhone but not on a Windows PC.

Convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Open HEIC to JPG in Safari on your iPhone (or on any computer).
  2. Choose your photos โ€” up to 20 at once.
  3. Keep Quality at 90%, or choose a KB limit if the form has one. For a typical exam photo limit, use HEIC to JPG under 50KB.
  4. Download the JPG files.

The conversion happens on your phone; the photos are not uploaded anywhere.

Stop iPhone From Saving HEIC

Go to Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats โ†’ Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay HEIC, so convert those.

Other iPhone Pitfalls

  • Rotation. iPhones store rotation as a tag instead of rotating the pixels. Some portals ignore the tag and show your photo sideways. Converting with a tool that applies the rotation (KbSnap does) fixes this.
  • Live Photos and Portrait mode. Only a still frame is uploaded, but Portrait mode's blurred background can look unnatural in an ID photo. Use the normal Photo mode.
  • Front camera mirroring. The selfie camera may mirror the image, which flips any text you are holding (for example a name slate). Turn off Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Mirror Front Camera, or use the rear camera with someone's help.
  • Size. Even after converting to JPG, a 12-megapixel photo is 2โ€“4 MB. You still need to resize it to the pixel size and KB range in your notification โ€” see How to Reduce Photo Size in KB.

Why Not Just Rename the File?

Renaming IMG_1234.HEIC to IMG_1234.jpg does not change the format inside the file. Many portals read the file's actual contents, detect HEIC, and reject it โ€” or accept it and then fail to display it to the verifier. Always convert.
