What the GATE (Engineering) size rules mean

  • The GATE (Engineering) photo is a portrait with the same shape as a 35×45mm passport photo at 413×531 pixels.
  • Its 600KB photo limit is more generous than the typical 50KB across the 10 academic and teaching exams on KbSnap — the highest photo limit in the group.
  • The signature box is a wide box (7:2), 3.5 times wider than it is tall at 560×160 pixels, 3–300KB.

Tips for this spec

  • 600KB is plenty for a 413×531 photo, so the output can stay at high JPEG quality. Don't shrink the file far below the limit — sharper is better.
  • The signature box is very wide. Sign on one line and crop tightly above and below the ink so it fills the frame.

Verify the current requirement on the official GATE (Engineering) website before you upload. Sizes can change with each notification.

Common reasons GATE (Engineering) uploads are rejected

  • The photo must be in colour against a plain white background, with the face covering 60–70% of the image. A distant shot, a coloured wall or other people in the frame can get the photo rejected.
  • The photo's width ÷ height must fall between 0.66 and 0.89, and it must be between 200×260 and 530×690 pixels. A square crop or a full phone-camera image falls outside these limits.
  • The signature must be in black or dark blue ink, 2.75–3.75 times wider than it is tall, and cover 70–80% of the cropped image. A small signature in a wide white box, initials only, or a signature in all capital letters is not accepted.
  • Both files must be JPEG/JPG. Photo 5–600KB, signature 3–300KB. PNG or HEIC (iPhone) files have to be converted first.

How to resize your GATE (Engineering) documents

  1. 1. Upload: choose a clear JPG, PNG, or iPhone HEIC photo or scan.
  2. 2. Crop: frame your face or signature inside the box shown for each document.
  3. 3. Process: KbSnap resizes to the exact pixels and compresses into the allowed KB range.
  4. 4. Check and download: confirm the pass/fail result, then upload the file to the GATE (Engineering) portal.

Files are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to KbSnap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photo size does KbSnap use for GATE (Engineering)?

The KbSnap preset for the GATE (Engineering) photo is 413×531px, 5–600KB, in JPG format. Confirm these numbers in your current notification before you upload, and aim for the middle of the KB range so a re-save does not push the file over the limit.

What signature size does KbSnap use for GATE (Engineering)?

The KbSnap preset for the GATE (Engineering) signature is 560×160px, 3–300KB. Sign on plain white paper in the ink colour your notification asks for (black is the safest choice) and crop tightly so the signature is clearly readable.

How do I reduce my GATE (Engineering) signature to 3–300KB?

Upload your scanned signature in the Signature step above, adjust the crop, and process it. KbSnap resizes it to 560×160px and compresses it into the 3–300KB range, then shows a pass/fail check before you download.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping, resizing, and compression all happen in your browser using the Canvas API. The file never leaves your device.

Why do different exams need different sizes?

Each exam body sets its own portal validation rules independently — there's no shared standard across UPSC, SSC, banking, and state PSCs.
